An article in the Sun-Times this week is another reminder to stop by Mac’s Deli in Chicago’s West Loop for some great food and a great cause. Run by Haymarket Center, this hot dog stand employs recovering addicts like supervisor Ken Taylor, who nearly died from an overdose after decades of addiction and incarceration. Now six months sober, Ken leads a team preparing affordable meals ($3.99 hot dogs!) while gaining valuable work experience. The deli serves as both job training and a daily reminder of recovery’s power. As Ken says, “Recovery is possible if you work the program.”
The clean, colorful deli has been embraced by the neighborhood, offering both hope to its workers and reasonably priced meals in an area where a sandwich can be $18. Haymarket is showing how social enterprise can create meaningful change — one hot dog at a time.
